Slingbox debuts in UK by Huw

PC Pro is reporting that the Slingbox is available in the UK.

The gadget, which streams video from your home over the internet either to another computer or a Windows Mobile device, allowing viewing and recording, has proved very popular in the US, especially among early adopters. At the moment, it’s only available from PC World, in-store and on their website here, although other Dixons group stores such as Currys.digital (the rebranded name of Dixons – obviously they just decided that the Dixons name had become synonymous with ignorant staff rather than ‘the best place on the high street to buy consumer electronics, although the staff are no better in Currys) will be stocking the Slingbox in the next 4-6 weeks.
The £179 seems fair, although it is more expensive than the US version, which costs $199. The concept seems good, although I’m not sure whether, at the moment, it would be any use. Wherever I am, when I am away from home, is far more likely to have a TV than good internet access that I can plug my laptop into, so it is rather pointless. However, I am sure many people will invest in one just so they can watch this summer’s World Cup matches on their work computer whilst pretending to check their emails! What is a much more interesting and useful proposition is the mobile idea. In the future, when the expected blanket WiFi coverage arrives in London, it would certainly be nice to have access to my home TV on my future smartphone or PDA (or perhaps Origami) whilst sitting in a cafe or on the bus.

More details in a press release here.
