The BBC has the story that Dell have been accused of falsely advertising some of their laptop products in China.
Apparently, the issue is with adverts that stated the laptops had one type of processor, where some machines had a cheaper model of the chip than the one advertised. Dell have apologised for the mistake, saying on the Direct2Dell blog that it was an “unfortunate and unintended marketing mistake”. According to what they say, they forgot to update the Chinese marketing information with the chnages they made to the spec.
In fact, the change of processor wasn’t that dramatic for most users. The difference between the chips was that the more expensive model had some kind of Intel hardware virtualisation technology that the cheaper model didn’t have, so it’s unlikely to affect users that aren’t in the enterprise market.
Still, an embarrasing mistake for Dell, and one that made it to the mainstream tech news, so it won’t be forgotten (especially for Chinese Dell buyers) for a while.

I hadn’t heard about this story before reading it in your post. That is definitely an embarrassing mistake for Dell. Frankly, I’m not sure how a company of that size and experience could make a mistake like that. I’d be ready to excuse that in a very small company or a start-up, but not for Dell.
